Chimney Questions, Answered Straight.

No sales fluff — just clear answers to what DFW homeowners actually ask us about chimney service, pricing, scheduling and safety.

Scheduling & Service

3 questions
How fast can you come out?

A real person answers your message within 2 minutes, 7am to midnight every day — weekends included — and we book consultations same-week across the DFW Metroplex. For emergencies like active leaks, a trapped animal, or post-fire damage, a tech is on the way within 2 hours during business hours. The faster we get eyes on the hearth, the sooner we can get the room back to looking right.

Do you give a specific arrival time?

Yes — a 1-hour arrival window, never a vague 4-hour block, and a text 30 minutes ahead with your technician's name and photo. You should know exactly who's walking into your living room and when.

What areas do you serve?

The whole DFW Metroplex — Dallas, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving, Garland, Richardson, Allen, Denton, Southlake and the surrounding communities. Wherever the fireplace is the room's focal point, that's our showroom.

Pricing & Quotes

3 questions
Is the inspection free?

The first inspection is free — we come out, study the fireplace and chimney, photograph everything, and hand you a written quote with zero obligation. A deeper diagnostic (Level 2 with a video scope) for insurance or real estate runs $199. You'll know exactly what the centerpiece of the room needs before you spend a dollar.

Do you provide written quotes before work begins?

Always. Before a tool is lifted you get a written, line-item quote with photos of what we found. If something turns up mid-project, we stop, show you, and rewrite the quote for your approval — the design and the budget stay in your hands.

Do you offer financing?

Yes — projects over $1,000 qualify for 12-month 0% APR financing through our partner. Soft credit pull, instant decision, and checking has no impact on your score. A reimagined hearth shouldn't have to wait on the calendar.

Safety & Standards

5 questions
How often should I have my chimney swept?

NFPA calls for a Level 1 inspection every year, with a sweep once buildup hits 1/8" of creosote — for a fireplace you actually burn, that's typically once per heating season. Keeping the flue clean is also what keeps the firebox and surround looking the way they should.

Are your technicians certified?

Yes — our chimney inspectors carry current CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) certifications, verifiable in the CSIA member directory at csia.org, and our fireplace installations are handled by NFI specialists. Good-looking work comes from trained hands.

Is there a membership that keeps maintenance on autopilot?

Yes — our annual maintenance membership is $19.99/month and includes a yearly Level 1 inspection and sweep ($248 value), priority scheduling, 10% off all repairs, and emergency-response priority. Cancel anytime, no contract. It keeps the room's centerpiece looking and drawing its best without you having to remember the calendar.

What is creosote and why is it dangerous?

Wood smoke leaves a tar-like residue called creosote on the walls of your flue, and it accumulates in three stages: flaky Stage 1, hard Stage 2, and glazed Stage 3. All of it is highly flammable. A chimney fire fed by creosote can reach 2,000°F, hot enough to crack your liner. Regular sweeping is the only reliable way to keep that buildup from ever getting the chance.

What's the difference between a Level 1, 2, and 3 inspection?

NFPA 211 defines three tiers of inspection. Level 1 is the annual visual check of readily accessible areas. Level 2 adds a video scope of the full flue and applies after a property sale, a fuel or appliance change, or a chimney fire. Level 3 means opening concealed areas when hidden damage is suspected.

Process & What to Expect

4 questions
Will the sweep make a mess in my house?

No. We lay drop cloths, seal off the hearth, and run a HEPA-filter vacuum the whole time. The room should look untouched when we leave — most clients are surprised there's no dust at all. A showpiece deserves to be treated like one.

How long does a typical job take?

A standard sweep and Level 1 inspection runs about 45–90 minutes. Design and repair work varies — a cap install is under an hour, while masonry, a reface, or liner work can take a day or more. Whatever it is, the timeline is spelled out in your written quote.

Do I need to be home during the service?

For the consultation and quote, yes — so we can walk you through what we found and you can sign off on the look and scope. For repeat or membership visits where access is already arranged, it's not always necessary.

What happens after the inspection?

You get a written, line-item report with photos of everything we found, a clear recommendation, and a no-pressure quote. Plenty of inspections end with 'everything looks great, see you next year' — and if the hearth is ready for a refresh, you'll have the full picture to decide.

Fireplaces, Gas & Inserts

4 questions
Do you work on gas fireplaces, not just wood?

Yes — gas fireplaces, log sets, and inserts are some of our favorite work: pilots, thermocouples, gas valves, burners, and venting. Trained technicians handle every gas visit, and each one includes a carbon-monoxide safety check. Whether the look you want is a steady designer flame or a roaring traditional fire, we tune it to taste.

Can you convert my wood fireplace to gas?

In most cases, yes — and it's one of the most satisfying makeovers we do. We assess the firebox and flue, confirm a sound liner (or install one), and fit a vented or ventless gas log set sized to your fireplace and local code. We'll walk you through the look, the flame, and the trade-offs so the finished hearth feels like the centerpiece you pictured.

My gas fireplace won't light — can you fix it?

Usually. The common culprits are a worn thermocouple/thermopile, a dirty or failed pilot assembly, or a gas-valve issue — all serviceable, so the flame you love comes back. If you smell gas, leave the home and call us (or your gas utility) immediately.

What are refractory panels and do mine need replacing?

Refractory panels are the heat-resistant panels lining a factory-built firebox — and they're a big part of how the fire reads from across the room. Most manufacturers call for replacement once cracks pass about 1/16", since cracked panels expose the metal shell and framing to heat. We'll tell you honestly whether yours can be cleaned up or genuinely need replacing.

Maintenance & Prevention

4 questions
Why does my chimney leak when it rains?

Usually one of four things: failed flashing where the chimney meets the roof, a cracked crown, a missing or rusted cap, or unsealed masonry. Left alone, water is also what stains and ruins the look of the firebox and surround below. We find the real entry point instead of guessing — and fix the source, not just the stain.

Should I waterproof my chimney?

In North Texas, yes — it's one of the best-value ways to protect both the structure and the appearance of your masonry. We use a breathable, vapor-permeable sealer that blocks rain while letting trapped moisture escape, which spares the brick from freeze-thaw spalling that turns a handsome stack ragged. It is not paint — paint traps water and does the damage it's meant to prevent.

What are signs my chimney needs attention?

White staining (efflorescence) on the brick, flaking or popping brick faces (spalling), a smoky smell when the fireplace sits idle, smoke spilling into the room, rust on the cap or firebox, or damp around the hearth. Beyond the safety side, every one of these quietly dulls the look of the room's focal point — so any of them is worth an inspection.

Do you clean dryer vents and air ducts too?

Yes. Lint-clogged dryer vents are a leading cause of house fires and slow dry times — we clean the full run to the exterior and verify airflow. We also offer air-duct cleaning and sealing for cleaner indoor air and better efficiency throughout the home.

Insurance, Real Estate & Warranty

3 questions
Do you provide reports for home sales or insurance?

Yes. Our Level 2 inspection ($199) produces an insurance- and real-estate-grade written report with video-scope footage and photos — exactly what's required after a property transfer or for a claim. A well-documented fireplace is also a selling point, so the report does double duty.

Is your work warrantied?

Yes. Workmanship carries a 1-year written warranty, and certain materials — stainless steel liners and caps among them — carry lifetime manufacturer warranties that transfer to a new owner. The finish you fall in love with is meant to last.

Will insurance cover chimney repairs?

It depends on the cause. Sudden events — a chimney fire, lightning, storm or impact damage — are often covered; gradual wear and deferred maintenance usually aren't. Our documented Level 2 report hands the adjuster the photos and detail they need to say yes.

How We Work

8 questions
What makes Space Fireplace Services different from a typical chimney company?

We start from the room, not the flue. Every job is approached like a design problem first and a service call second: how should the hearth look, how should the flame read, how does the finish live with the rest of the space — then the craft and the safety to make it real. You also keep what we leave behind: photographed written reports, before/after readings, and honest findings sorted into "great as-is," "worth watching," and "needs attention now." The result is a centerpiece you love and a record you could hand to an insurer, a buyer's agent, or a code official and have it hold up.

Are you a design studio or a service company — which is it?

Both, on purpose. We run like a showroom for the hearth: we'll help you choose the look — flame style, surround material, finish, proportion — and then our certified masons and technicians build and maintain it to code. One team carries a project from 'what could this room become' all the way through the annual sweep years later, so the aesthetic and the workmanship never get handed off to strangers.

Where do you work?

Across the DFW Metroplex — Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Arlington, Irving, and the surrounding communities — out of our Dallas base. Staying local is part of the point: it's how we keep the same hands, the same eye for finish, and the same standard on every hearth we touch.

Do you actually do the work, or subcontract it out?

We do it ourselves. The design conversation, the masonry, the gas work, the finish — all handled by our own trained crew, not whichever subcontractor happened to be free. When the look of your room is on the line, you want the same people who pitched the vision standing there making it real.

Will you tell me if I don't need a repair?

Yes, in writing. A busy studio doesn't need to invent work. If the hearth is sound, the report says so; if a smaller fix or a simple refresh is the right move, that's what we recommend. The honesty of the report is part of the product — it's how a design relationship lasts years.

How do you price work, and will I get a real quote?

We look first, design and diagnose, then quote — because the right scope on a correctly understood room is the only number worth giving. You get a documented quote with the reasoning behind each line, not a figure pulled before we understand the space. Where something is a genuine investment — a full reface, a custom build, a multi-flue reline — we're candid about it and explain why doing it beautifully once beats a recurring patch.

A cap blown off in a storm — is that something you'll come out for?

Yes. For urgent situations — a cap or chase cover lost in a storm, a fully blocked flue, a suspected post-fire hazard — we secure it same-day or fit a temporary cover so an open flue isn't taking on rain and wildlife, then return to install the permanent solution and put the look back right. Call (469) 992-4912 or reach us in Dallas, TX.

Do you pull permits and leave paperwork that holds up for resale and insurance?

Where the work is a permitted, inspectable event — relines, gas cap-offs, structural rebuilds, new builds — our project leads pull the permit, coordinate inspection, and document the result. A permitted, documented hearth is a clean line on your home's record and a quiet selling point: exactly what a future buyer's inspector and your insurer will want to see.
