Chimney Inspection

Before you fall in love with a hearth — or before you light the one you have — it pays to know what's really behind the brick. Our chimney inspection reads the whole system the way a designer reads a room: the surround and firebox finish, the crown and cap lines, and the hidden flue condition that decides whether this can stay your focal point for years. We document everything with photos so you can plan around facts, not guesses. And yes, it's a full safety and code assessment that catches small issues before they become a closed-off fireplace.

What is it

What is chimney inspection?

Owning a fireplace well starts with the Level 1, and we treat that baseline with real rigor. NFPA 211 defines it as the standard for a system in continuous service with no change in use: a readily-accessible visual examination of the chimney exterior, the accessible interior, and the connection to the appliance. It confirms the structure is sound, the flue is clear of obstruction and combustible deposits, and the venting path is intact — the right annual check for a hearth you've used the same way, season after season. More than a formality, it's the visit where a trained eye catches the small problem while it's still small, long before it turns into the expensive one.

The difference between a Space Fireplace Services Level 1 and a checkbox walk-through is the specificity of what the technician hunts for. The crown gets read for cracks and proper overhang; the cap and spark arrestor, the flashing seal at the roofline, the mortar joints and brick face for spalling, the visible flue tiles for cracking, the smoke chamber and shelf, the damper operation — each is examined on its own terms. We read draft and verify clearances as we go. Anything that isn't readily accessible, by definition, becomes a recommendation to escalate to Level 2: we don't guess at a concealed condition and we don't sign off on what we couldn't see. That restraint is precisely what makes the report worth trusting.

What lands in your hands is a written report photographed component by component, with a plain-language condition rating and a prioritized list of findings — what's safe, what to keep an eye on, and what needs attention now. We deliberately separate genuine safety items from cosmetic ones so you can budget with confidence instead of dread. Every technician follows the same protocol on every project our crew leads, so a Space Fireplace Services report carries identical weight behind a quiet annual tune-up or a real-estate file. To us, premium means a document you can hand an insurer, a buyer, or a contractor and have it hold up under scrutiny.

Most of a Level 1's value lives in the early catch. A hairline crown crack found before it lets in a winter of water; the first bloom of efflorescence marking a moisture path; a damper just starting to seize; a cap whose spark screen has rusted thin — none is an emergency the day we find it, and every one becomes an expensive repair if it sits unseen for a season or two. Because the same technician examines the same components year after year, your chimney gets a baseline of its own, and deterioration shows up as a trend instead of a shock. That continuity is a premium feature in itself: the report stops being a one-time snapshot and becomes a record that compounds in value the longer your centerpiece stays under the same disciplined eye.

Built to code

The code your chimney inspection has to meet.

A chimney inspection isn't a matter of opinion — it's held to published national standards. Space Fireplace builds every job to the named codes below and documents it, so the work is provably right for an inspector, an insurer, or a future buyer. These are the universal standards; your city's permit and inspection requirements are confirmed with the local authority before we pull the job.

NFPA 211NFPA 54UL-1777UL-103HTIRC

NFPA 211 Level 1

This is the annual standard: a visual exam of the readily accessible chimney exterior, the accessible interior, and the appliance connection. It suits a system in continuous service with no change in how it's used.

NFPA 211 Level 2

Level 2 brings a video scope of the flue interior plus inspection of accessible attic and crawlspace passages. It becomes required after a property transfer, a fuel or appliance change, or a hazardous event like a chimney fire, earthquake, or lightning strike.

NFPA 211 Level 3

Only when a Level 1 or 2 inspection points to a concealed hazard that can't be evaluated any other way do we open things up, removing components or masonry to see what's really there.

3-2-10 height check

Part of the inspection is the height rule: the flue must terminate ≥3 ft above the roof penetration and ≥2 ft above anything within 10 ft. A chimney that smokes or back-drafts into the room has usually failed exactly this.

Codes cited are the established national standards (NFPA, UL, IRC) that govern this service. The adopted code edition, permit, and inspection requirements vary by city —Space Fireplace verifies them with your local authority having jurisdiction on every job.

FAQ

Common questions about chimney inspection.

How often should the chimney behind a fireplace be swept?

Plan on a Level 1 inspection every year — that's the NFPA cadence — with an actual sweep once buildup reaches 1/8" of creosote. For a fireplace you light through the season, that usually lands at once a heating season. Think of it as the upkeep that keeps the centerpiece of the room clean, drawing well, and ready to look its best.

Are the people working on my fireplace certified?

Yes. The inspectors who assess your chimney hold current CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) certifications — you can confirm them in the CSIA member directory at csia.org — and our fireplace installations are handled by NFI specialists. The craft that makes a hearth a showpiece starts with the people standing in front of it.

Can you come out fast when something goes wrong?

Yes — emergency response is available 24/7 (subject to crew availability) for active water leaks, an animal trapped in the flue, post-fire damage, and storm damage, same-day in most cases. A fireplace is the heart of a room; when it's at risk, we treat it that way.

Will I see a written quote before any work starts?

Always. You get a written quote before a single tool comes out, with photos of exactly what we found. Final pricing tracks the chimney's real condition and anything additional the inspection surfaces — no surprises, just a clear picture of what your fireplace needs.

Is there a maintenance plan that keeps it all on schedule?

Yes — our annual maintenance membership runs $19.99/month ($240/year) and covers a yearly Level 1 inspection and sweep ($248 value), priority scheduling, 10% off all repairs, and emergency-response priority. Cancel anytime, no contract. It's the quiet way to keep your hearth looking and working its best year after year.
