Chimney Glossary

Every chimney term we use, explained without jargon. Bookmark this — it's the same vocabulary your insurance adjuster + home inspector will use.

Creosote

Tar-like residue from incomplete wood combustion. Highly flammable.

Condensed wood smoke turned residue, ranging from black dust to a glassy tar, deposited inside the chimney flue wherever smoke meets cool walls. Stage 1 is dust, Stage 2 is crunchy, and Stage 3 is hard glaze, the form responsible for most chimney fires. Annual sweeping clears Stages 1–2, while Stage 3 takes restoration to remove.

NFPA 211

The US standard governing how chimneys, fireplaces, and vent systems are installed.

The National Fire Protection Association code that governs chimney installation, inspection, and maintenance in the United States. Defines the three levels of inspection, clearance requirements, and creosote thresholds. Every Space Fireplace Services job follows NFPA 211.

Inspection Levels

Level 1 covers the annual look; Level 2 is triggered by a sale or an event; Level 3 opens up concealed damage.

NFPA 211 defines three formal inspection tiers. Level 1 covers readily accessible areas and is recommended annually. Level 2 adds a video scope and is required after a property transfer, a system change, or any hazardous event such as a chimney fire, lightning, or an earthquake. Level 3 is invasive, opening walls or the chase, and is used when concealed damage is suspected after a Level 2.

Flue

The inner passage that draws combustion gases up and out of the room.

Inside every chimney runs a vertical channel, the flue, carrying smoke, water vapor, and CO out of the house. It may be unlined masonry (older construction, and problematic), clay-tile lined as most masonry chimneys are, or metal-lined in modern systems. A cracked flue is a fire hazard.

Liner

The channel running inside the flue — clay tile, stainless steel, or cast-in-place.

Lining material installed on the interior of the chimney flue. Modern code requires a UL-listed liner, most often 316Ti or 316L stainless steel, built to contain heat and gases. A cracked or missing liner amounts to a fire hazard and a code violation at once; relining is the standard fix.

Crown

The concrete cap at the very top of a masonry chimney.

Capping the top course of a masonry chimney is a slab of poured concrete or stone, a different element from the metal chimney cap. Its job is shedding water away from the masonry below, so cracks in the crown let water in and accelerated freeze-thaw spalling follows. Hairline cracks respond to crown coat sealing, while serious damage calls for a full rebuild.

Chimney Cap

The metal cover-and-mesh assembly on top of the flue.

Mounted over the flue opening, the cap keeps rain, snow, and animals out while holding embers in. Stainless steel lasts a lifetime where galvanized gives roughly 5 years, and mesh size matters for spark arresting, since NFPA 211 requires specific dimensions.

Spalling

Brick face that flakes and sheds when trapped moisture meets repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Brick deterioration you can see: the outer face flakes, pops, or crumbles after water soaks in and freezes inside the brick. In DFW, freeze-thaw cycles plus humid summers accelerate spalling. Waterproofing slows the process down, but rebuilding the affected sections is the only real fix.

Tuckpointing

Repointing or rebuilding the mortar joints between bricks.

Grinding out failed mortar joints and refilling them with fresh, color-matched mortar. The work restores structural integrity and weather resistance, and it is common on DFW chimneys 20+ years old.

Damper

The valve that opens/closes the flue.

A metal plate or valve that opens to release smoke while you burn and closes to seal the flue between fires. It comes in two types, the traditional throat damper above the firebox and the modern top damper at the very top, which seals far better and saves 30%+ on heat loss.

Smoke Chamber

The transition area between the firebox and the flue.

Above the firebox sits an angled, parging-lined space that funnels smoke into the narrower flue. Rough surfaces there invite creosote deposits; refractory parging smooths them out for better draft and less buildup.

CSIA

Chimney Safety Institute of America — the certification that sets the industry standard.

The non-profit that certifies professional chimney sweeps, inspectors, and reviewers in the US. CSIA-certified inspectors hold current credentials verifiable in the CSIA member directory. Every Space Fireplace Services field tech is CSIA-certified.

Firebox

The chamber where the fire actually burns.

Where the fire actually lives: a chamber lined in brick or refractory panels. Cracked panels amount to a fire-safety code violation, since heat can transfer to the combustible framing behind, and replacements must be in-spec for the fireplace make and model.

Throat

The narrowed opening just above the firebox.

Just above the firebox, a funneled brick passage holds the damper and starts smoke on its climb into the smoke chamber. Improper throat sizing produces smoking and draft issues, and a smoke-guard kit is often the cheapest fix.

Hearth

The floor of the firebox together with the protective extension in front of it.

Made up of two parts: the inner hearth forming the firebox floor, and the hearth extension, the non-combustible projection out in front. Under the IRC the extension must run at least 16 inches deep for fireboxes under 6 sq ft and 20 inches for larger ones.

Thimble

The pass-through fitting that carries a flue where it penetrates a wall.

UL-listed and made of refractory or metal, this sleeve carries a stove pipe safely through a combustible wall into the chimney. Sized or installed improperly, a thimble becomes a leading cause of wall fires.

Chase

The framed enclosure around a factory-built chimney.

Outside the house, a wood-framed, siding-clad rectangular structure conceals a metal factory-built chimney. The top is the most common leak point and needs proper flashing, plus a cricket when the chase runs wider than 30 inches.

Chase Cover

The metal lid that caps a chase.

The sloped sheet-metal piece that tops a chase enclosure and sheds water off it. Galvanized versions rust through in 7–10 years and stain the chase siding orange; stainless and copper last 25+ years.

Cricket

The roof saddle that diverts water around a chimney.

Built on the roof's upslope side behind the chimney, a cricket is a small ridge shaped to split runoff and steer it around the stack instead of letting it pool against the masonry. IRC R1003.20 calls for one on any chimney over 30\" wide.

Flashing

Metal sheeting that seals where chimney meets roof.

Where roof meets chimney, two layers make the weather seal: step flashing tucked beneath the shingles and counter-flashing let into the mortar joints above. Caulk-only patches tend to fail within 2 years; done right, the job means grinding fresh reglets into the brick.

Spark Arrestor

The mesh across a chimney cap that keeps embers from drifting out.

Inside every chimney cap sits its wire mesh, the spark arrestor. NFPA 211 holds the openings between 3/8\" and 1/2\": the mesh must not pass a 1/2\" sphere, which is what stops sparks, while staying open enough that draft is never choked. Wildfire zones and many municipalities require one.

Video Scope

Camera inspection of the inside of the flue.

Run down the flue on a flexible cable, this high-resolution camera lets the interior be read tile by tile: cracks, gaps, creosote buildup, animal nests, displaced tiles. Level 2 NFPA inspections require it, and it is standard practice before an insurance claim.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Required safety device for fireplaces.

In any home with a fireplace, UL-2034 listed carbon monoxide detectors with digital readouts belong on every floor and within 15 feet of each sleeping area. Sensors lose accuracy with age, so plan on replacement every 7 years.

Draft

Upward flow of air through the chimney.

Draft is the pressure differential between the chimney's interior and the outside air, the pull that carries combustion gases upward. Where it weakens, smoking, backpuffing, and CO buildup follow. Remedies include warming the flue, opening a window, or correcting negative pressure in the house.

Backdraft

Reverse airflow, where smoke or fumes push back down into the room instead of rising.

When chimney draft reverses, combustion byproducts travel down the flue and into the living space. Typical culprits: a cold flue, a blocked cap, negative house pressure from exhaust fans, or a taller competing flue. Because the risk is CO, schedule a diagnostic immediately.

Refractory Panel

The replaceable firebox lining of a factory-built fireplace.

Pre-cast cement panels line the firebox of a zero-clearance fireplace, and they are meant to stay whole: any crack wider than 1/16\" or a credit-card edge is a code violation, because heat can then reach the steel firebox shell and the framing around it.

Zero-Clearance Fireplace

Factory-built fireplace that can be installed against framing.

This UL-listed manufactured fireplace assembly carries its own built-in insulation and venting, so it can be framed directly against combustible construction. It is not a masonry fireplace, and its replacement parts are model-specific.

Gas Valve

The manual or millivolt valve that governs how much gas reaches a log set.

Usually set into the firebox floor, a side wall, or behind a key on the hearth, this is the shut-off for the fireplace's gas supply. Codes require a shut-off you can reach without removing the logs. In millivolt valves, current generated by a thermopile opens the main valve.

Thermopile

The voltage-generating sensor that powers a gas valve.

Heated by the pilot flame, this bundle of thermocouples generates millivolts of electricity and drives the main valve in standing-pilot gas fireplaces. On a meter, 650–850 mV reads healthy; below 300 mV, the part is failing.

Thermocouple

Single sensor that holds the pilot valve open.

Generating ~25 mV when heated, this single-junction temperature sensor holds the pilot's safety valve open. No part fails more often in a gas fireplace, and at $30 it is best treated as routine maintenance rather than a repair.

Parging

A smooth refractory mortar coat troweled over the smoke chamber walls.

Refractory mortar troweled over the rough corbeled brick of the smoke chamber, leaving a smooth surface. Code requires it on smoke chambers, and the payoff is real: better draft and dramatically less creosote accumulation.

Tile Relining

Swapping cracked clay flue tiles for fresh tile or a metal liner.

Once clay flue tiles crack or shift, often after a chimney fire, the flue must be relined. Three routes exist: replacing the tiles themselves, which requires opening the masonry; a cast-in-place liner; or a stainless steel liner, the most common choice today.

Fireback

Decorative cast-iron plate behind the fire.

Hung at the rear of the firebox, this ornamental cast-iron or steel plate protects the masonry and radiates heat back into the room. You will find them in heritage masonry fireplaces; modern factory-built units do without.

Flue Tile

Clay ceramic blocks stacked to form a chimney flue.

Terracotta blocks, rectangular or round and typically 24\" tall, stacked with thin mortar joints to form the inner channel of a masonry chimney. Tiles that crack, gap, or shift out of place fail inspection and call for relining.

Ash Dump

A hatch set into the firebox floor that drops ash down to a basement ash pit.

Older masonry fireplaces often hide a small trap door in the firebox floor, dropping ash into a storage chamber reached from the basement or crawl space. Modern fireplaces typically lack this; ash is shoveled out instead.

Level 1 Inspection

Visual annual inspection of readily accessible areas.

The baseline yearly check of the readily accessible portions of the chimney and its connections, done with nothing more specialized than a flashlight. Best scheduled annually before heating season; expect ~30 minutes and $99–$149 in DFW.

Level 2 Inspection

A close-up inspection run with a video scope, called for before a sale and after any event.

Beyond the Level 1 scope, this inspection adds attic and crawl space access plus a video scope run inside the flue. It is required after property transfer, a fuel-source change, a hazardous event (chimney fire, lightning, seismic), or when a Level 1 finding triggers it. $199–$299 in DFW.

Level 3 Inspection

Invasive inspection involving removal of components or framing.

Ordered when a Level 2 inspection raises suspicion of concealed damage, a Level 3 may involve removing brick, drywall, or chase siding to reach hidden portions of the chimney. Pricing varies with the access work required and is quoted post-Level-2.
